The Athletes’ Village was built to accommodate up to 1000 competitors and officials from 35 countries. The Village comprised two sections that were situated either on Beecroft Park or opposite it.
The buildings on Beecroft Park were temporary structures because they were to be removed after the Games making way for the creation of Beecroft Park. The temporary buildings included the central recreational/dining area and the Village entrance. The administration and shopping complex were across the road on the site where the Empire Village shopping centre is still today.
The dining area was designed around a buffet system allowing the hall to seat 1200 people, whereas the recreational hall only seated 500 people.
After the Games, the land was bought from the council by
Mr Col Trickey who built on his newly acquired land. He also established Floreat Forum and library in 1965.
